This week in Language Arts...

Almost everyone is finished with their most recent Practice EOG.  I will score them this week and send the grade home.  We will go over each question together in class to make sure everyone understands the correct answer.  Students will work at EOG and Vocabulary Centers to practice skills like main idea, inference, and reading comprehension.
 
 
 
Vocabulary for the Week- Test on Thursday!!
 
Cause: What makes something happen
  • Effect: What happens because of something.
  • Main Idea: What the story is mainly about.
  • Purpose: why the author wrote the passage
  • Opinion: How a person feels about something
  • Characteristics: Traits a character has
  • Fact: A statement that is true
  • Details:
    sentences that support the main idea that tells who, what, when, where and why

    To Entertain: Humor the reader (funny)
  • To Inform: To give information or facts to the reader
  • To Persuade: To get the reader to buy or do something
  • Prediction: Something you think will happen
  • Compare and Contrast: How are things alike and different
  • Sequence: The order of events
  • Inference:
  • A special kind of guess or opinion based on facts.
    Characters: The people or animals in the story
  • Plot: Part of the story that tells what happens.
  • Problem: Part of the Plot. Also known as the conflict 
  • Resolution: When the problem in the story is fixed
  • Setting: Where and when the story takes place.
  • Synonym: Words that have the same meaning
  • Antonym: Words that have the opposite meaning

    Tutoring

    I have mentioned this to the students repeatedly BUT no one seems to want to take me up on it...

    Week of 4/22/2013

    Vocabulary Test on Thursday-  All of the words on remaining Vocabulary Tests will be EOG- related words.  This is list #1...

    GENRES
    • Fiction: A story that is made up or not true
    • Non-Fiction: A selection that is true or factual
    • Narrative: Another name for a story
    • EyeWitness Account: A report of what a person saw with their own eyes
    • Drama: Another word for plays
    • Poetry: A text with stanzas. Lines, and rhyming words
    • Memoirs: A kind of writing that tells someone’s memories
    • Summary: A retelling of the most important parts of what was read.
    • Order Form: Something you fill out when you want to buy something.
    • Menu: A list of choices you can get at a restaurant.
    • Schedule: A list of times and activities
    • Recipe: Directions for cooking something
    • Make-believe: made up/not real
    • Biography: A story about someone’s life
    • Autobiography: When the author tells his own life story     
    • Article: A non-fiction selection usually found in a newspaper or magazine.
    • Fantasy: Stories that have elements in them that could not really happen.
    • Folk Tales: Fiction stories that are based on legends.
    • Fairy Tales: Stories that involve unrealistic characters like fairies, and usually have a happy ending 
    • Myths/Legend: A story passed down from generations that explain historical events
    • Diaries/Journals: A record of daily events
     
    We will also have a PRACTICE EOG TEST this week.  These scores will be sent home. PLEASE ask your student for these results.
     
    We will clean out notebook on Monday or Tuesday and get them set-up for remainder of the year.

    April seems like a perfect month for Poetry...

    Wow, where does time go??  We will be taking EOG's before you know it.  It's time to get serious!
    We will be reviewing poetry terms and styles.  Students will also start reviewing concepts we've covered throughout the year.  There will be lots of EOG style passages and reading in the weeks to come.

    Be prepared for class every day.  Make sure to have your notebook, journal and pencils.  We must work every day to stay focused and give 100 percent.  I want every one of you to feel comfortable when the End of Grade Tests roll around.

    We will have a vocabulary test next Thursday.  I will give you ten words on Tuesday and 10 more on Thursday.  You will have an entire week to study these words.

    Here are the first 10:

    5.  onomatopoeia
    6.  lyric poem
    7.  narrative poem

    Homework Tuesday night:  Give an example of each term (except 6 and 7)
    Homework Wednesday night:  Assignment on "Poison Tree"
    Homework Thursday: Read 30 minutes and write a 4 to 5 sentence summary
