Notes from 12-11-12

Folktales have been handed down and reflect cultural values.

They come from an oral tradition and were written down much later so there are
multiple versions.

Typically, in the simple plot, good eventually triumphs over evil.

Genre purposes:

The purpose of a folktale is to tell an entertaining  story, to reveal human nature, to kindle imagination, to understand universal qualities of humankind

(how humans are alike), to convey morals and values, and to instill cultural beliefs, values and practices.

- Folktales   a tale circulated by word of mouth among the common folk

 - Fairy Tales is a type of short story that typically features fantasy characters, such as fairies, goblins, elves, trolls, dwarves, giants, mermaids, or gnomes, and usually magic or enchantments.

- Legends  regarded as historical although not verifiable

King Bladud

- Myths –mythos- contains supernatural beings (gods and goddesses) and attempts to explain something

Fables – A short story, typically with animals as characters, conveying a moral.

Tall Tales-  An exaggerated, unreliable story

Porquoi a story that explains how or why
