We NEED magazines and newspapers!!!

Monday we will begin a unit on newspapers, magazines, commercials, advertisements, propaganda, bias, author's point of view and purpose.  We cannot do this without used newspapers and magazines.  I thank those students who have provided these for the class--but we need many, many more.

Students will be given a list of 26 vocabulary words.  We will test this Thursday on the first 13 words and next Thursday on the remaining 13 words.  Please make sure your student has this list in their 3 ring binder.

We will also have DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) several times a week.  On those days, students will read in class and summarize.  I will check summaries to make sure they are completed correctly.  These will also be in three ring binders.  All students are required to have a book of their choice.  Last book reports are free choice and do not have to be within year long theme.

Please make sure your student has his/her EOG review book every day.  We will be working in them daily.

I can finally get on my blog again!!!

So sorry, my blog has been down for over a week.  I need to get information to you--so, here we go...

Our basket is a no go!!  Only a few students brought in items and it looks like our class will not be represented in the auction unless we get the following:  a basket/container to place items, a gift certificate from a local Mexican restaurant, and a few more hispanic items. We need these on Monday.  Right now, we have glasses, salsa, chips, tea towels, tablecloth, and a few food items.  Someone, please help!!  HUGE thank yous to those who brought in the items that we have.

Book Reports and Projects were extended one week.  They are now due on Tuesday the 6th.  Those students who handed them on the original date will receive extra credit.

Homework is still EVERY night.  Read for 40 minutes and summarize what was read in 5+ sentences or work in EOG book for 40 minutes, or split it up.  Students may read 20 minutes and EOG 20 minutes.

Students will receive new vocabulary this week.  They will not have a vocabulary test but they will need to use these words in their writing.  Students will begin a research paper this week on the Harlem Renaissance.   Some of it will be worked on at school but they will also need to be researching and writing/typing at home.
