Bring it On!!! 6th grade 2013-2014

Middle School is a new experience for all our 6th grade students. It’s a year of transition as they move from a more self-contained classroom to the freedoms and flexibility of moving around campus, changing teachers, and figuring out lockers. Middle School also often marks the onset of young adolescence, a time when children change rapidly and unpredictably in their intellectual, moral, physical, and social aspects. The 6th grade Program we’ve designed addresses these issues in a nurturing yet challenging manner. We have many activities and experiences designed to provide a smooth start to the rigors ahead.


As you plan for the first days of school, here are some updates that will help you:

 The school year begins on Wednesday, August 21st with a full day from 7:45-2:45.


 Please be certain you have updated all the relevant information on the forms from the front office.  You can also find helpful information about 6th grade on the school's website:

o Supply lists for 6th grade.
  
o Physical Exam or Health Update form

o Car Tags

o Schedules


While the school day officially begins at 7:45, I ask that parents recognize that arriving to school at 7:45 is, in effect, late. Children need time to prepare for the school day, to organize their materials, to use their lockers, to touch base with a teacher, and to visit with their friends. Please plan on arriving by 7:30 to ensure that these tasks contribute to a strong start every day.

Please remember your children are busy and engaged during the school day. We ask that students keep cell phones in their lockers or backpacks and avoid checking or using them during the day except with a teacher’s permission in certain special circumstances. Therefore, if you need to get a message to your child, please call the office. 

Please always check and sign the Friday Folder.

Please keep in mind that I will call you if concerns need to be addressed immediately.

The agenda/assignment books will still be sent home every day. Your child will  be required to write in the agenda books.  The agenda book also serves as a great way to correspond daily. Sometimes I will write a note in it to you, so I would appreciate your checking it daily. The agenda book will also let you know about homework and what we do each day.

My goal is to help students to become active in their education so they enjoy learning

new ideas and concepts that they can take with them throughout their educational career.
I will give my students the skills and knowledge necessary for their successful futures,
as well as instilling an eagerness and enthusiasm to know more and to question why. I want
them all to believe that there isn’t anything they can’t do. I plan on making your child feel
confident academically, as well as raising his or her self-esteem personally. I will achieve this
while being sensitive and aware of each of their capabilities and needs. My classroom will
include mutual respect and kindness for all.

I believe working together as a team will help enhance your child’s education. I look

6th Grade Language Arts Overview:

In Unit 1, students will read several short stories, poems, and non-fiction based on the theme "Who Am I?"  In this unit we will explore characteristics of literary genres, literary elements and devices, and how authors use these structures to create meaning and support themes.  Students will learn how to read "deeply" and to annotate the text to cite evidence to support their answers. 

The Common Core State Standards place an emphasis on students reading deeply and widely across genres, as well as reading books at higher Lexile levels.  The new standards also increase the emphasis on reading non-fiction tests.
